You will find pictures of some of our work below. Quite a bit of custom cable and metal fabrication went into this test set. Our NDA keeps us from saying exactly what it is, but we can speak in generalities.

This system is used in production testing of certain commercial avionics assemblies. It replaced a laborious, manual 3+ hour flight-qualification test with one that is mostly unattended and takes only about 40 minutes. It requires no special skill or training to operate, and is much more comprehensive than the test it replaced.

There is a host computer running a custom software application that controls a Racal 1256 chassis via GPIB. The Racal unit drives RF relays to handle the routing of high-frequency signals to / from the DUT. Other analog signals, discrete I/O, serial communications, and 400Hz power are routed directly through switch cards in the Racal chassis.

The DUT is first tested for shorts or opens. When power is applied, the test system verifies processor function and validates the BIOS revision, etc. Once the DUT is running, the system downloads a test application to the DUT, which is then used to verify every hardware function and signal path in the DUT.

When the test finishes, a printed test report highlights any failed test steps in red ink, as an aid to troubleshooting. The customer was delighted enough with the first of these test sets that they ordered a second unit.
